- Abstract
- Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of abdominal moxibustion on constipation, quality of sleep, and depression in elders. Methods: This study was conducted with a nonequivalent control group pretest- posttest design. Data collection was conducted from February 23 to April 5, 2015. Participants were 66 older individuals who were recruited from two senior welfare centers for homebound elders in B metropolitan city. Thirty six participants were assigned to the experimental group and 30 to the control group. Collected data were analyzed for changes in constipation, quality of sleep, and depression between pre and post abdominal moxibustion. Data were analyzed using x2 test, independent sample t-test, Sapiro-Wilk test, and repeated measures ANOVA with the SPSS 22.0 Windows program. Results: There was a significant increase in the frequency of bowel movements per week and a decrease on the constipation assessment scale. Additionally, the quality of sleep increased and depression decreased between pre and post abdominal moxibustion. Conclusion: Abdominal moxibustion was effective in changing the degree of constipation, increasing quality of sleep, and decreasing depression. Therefore, it is an effective intervention for use with Elders.
