| dc.description.abstract | The films of Zhang Lu examine questions related to why humans desire solidarity and community, and which solidarity and community they pursue. Zhang Lu is a member of diaspora, an outsider, an alienated intellectual watching the explosive capitalization of China. It is natural that he made his debut as a director with <11 years> and <Tang Shi>, as these movies were both about alienated people. Solidarity and community gradually become visible In the films of Zhang Lu. Especially in <Gyeongju>, two unfamiliar people welcome each other with hospitality. They both understand and accept each other. This leads to a change between them. They don’t do anything for each other and don’t interfere with each other’s behavior, but for this reason solidarity occurs and they can change themselves. Jean-Luc Nancy described this as an inoperative community. Nancy does not mean failing, but rather a spontaneous or ‘unworked’ inclination to come together that has no object or purpose other than itself. The inoperative community does not pursue a single value or ideology. In this community, “Being Together” is important. <The Quiet Dream(춘몽)> in particular shows the story of “Being Together”. In this film, Chosunjok, North Korean defectors, bullies, epilepsy patient, and general paralysis patient appear. By being together, they don’t make extreme choices in an ethical aporia. They supplement each other. Paradoxically, they can have solidarity because they are abandoned beings. True community is impossible in the laws and system. This is because community can be created only in the cracks of the symbol. So far, Zhang Lu has talked about the life of a surplus human being encased in capitalism. But in the neoliberal system, anyone can be abandoned and alienated. For this reason, we are more desirous of community and solidarity. I hope that Chang Lu will continue to make films that suggest alternative communities. | - |
