- Abstract
- Such expressionistic and postmodernist dream plays as To Damascus 1, The Dance of Death, A Dream Play, and Ghost Sonata by August Strindberg principally show the anguish of joys and the pleasure of sufferings in human beings’ lives. His works consist of new dramatic patterns-a dream of fantasy, delusion, paranoia, memories, experiences, spontaneous ideas, lunacy, schizophrenia, impossibilities, and improvisations. He enjoys producing the dream plays related to the unconsciousness of inner minds. His favorite themes have been endless waiting and the suffering in lives; Mankind is to be pitied. He tries to create an innovative circle stage of repetition and Dionysian disorder with prototypical characters, flashback, montage, violence, hatred, revenge, deception, snobbery, incest, conversion, contrapuntal structure, dream, and death. His major characters are some wise persons who try to recognize Nietzschean Übermensch and eternal recurrence, Schopenhauer’s free will, Spinoza’s intuitive wisdom, the asceticism of Hartman and Kierkegaard, Swedenborg’s Gnosticism, and the causality and samsara of Buddhism.
