초록

This article examines the liberal transformation of Korean society in light of Foucault’s concept of governmentality and the significance of the 1991 reference point as discussed in Baek Seung-wook’s 2022 book, The Starting Point of the Forgotten Decline of The article, 1991, also considers the work of Yoon So-young and Gwacheon in their 2024 publication, Seminar on the Debate on the Character of Korean Society (IV), which is closely related to the aforementioned text, and evaluates it against the backdrop of the changes evident in their earlier work. It argues that Baek’s original aim of examining Korea’s (neo)liberal transition through the Foucauldian lens of governmentality is ultimately unsuccessful. Furthermore, this paper suggests that the author's new point of reference, 1991, represents collective political episodes that are inadequate for advancing the discourse on Korea’s (neo)liberal transition. Baek’s work follows a similar trajectory to the recent work of Yoon So-young and Gwacheon, who seem to have deviated from their Marxist research, which has prevented them from discussing the current situation in a positive way. This is due to Baek Seung-wook, Yoon So-young and Gwacheon’s preoccupation with recent Korean political episodes and the lack of clarity in their previous Marxist or Foucauldian research.
