A Qualitative Case Study on the Settlement Process and Social Connection Formation of Entrepreneurs Migrating without Prior Local Ties: The Case of Tongyeong

초록

This study examines how non-local entrepreneurs who migrated to Tongyeong, South Korea, without prior local ties build social connections to sustain their settlement—an aspect overlooked in existing research on non-agricultural entrepreneurial settlement without prior local ties. Five participants with three or more years in business were studied through triangulation of data (in-depth interviews, public self-narratives, and Instagram posts) and thematic analysis. Findings reveal a four-stage cyclical model: (1) dual escape-and-quest motive; (2) building a portfolio-worker-style livelihood; (3) SNS-based weak ties and boundary cooperation; (4) multilayered identity reconstruction. The study offers a settlement and social connection formation model with practical implications for consulting and policy design. Future research should examine re-migration cases and multi-region comparisons.
