Malaysia 2024: Reform Task Amid Stabilization of Unity Government

초록

2024 is evaluated as a year in which the Unity Government has achieved stability in the political and economic sectors. However, in the political sector, complaints are growing due to the slow pace of reforms promised by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Attention is being paid to whether these complaints would affect the four state parliamentary by-elections held this year. The Unity Government won three out of four by-elections, and this result was analyzed as showing that the Malaysian people are choosing stability despite slow reform. The opposition PN coalition showed its limitations in continuing the expansion of the green wave that was shown after the 15th general election. This is because the PN leadership has been experiencing internal and external turmoil due to legal risks, factional conflicts within Bersatu, and the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat’ decision not to expel six Bersatu lawmakers who were Bersatu members but supported Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. In the economic sector, Anwar's MADANI economic framework was evaluated to have laid the foundation for stable economic growth by showing results in attracting investment in the digital economy, developing the semiconductor industry, and energy transition. Successful economic reforms will be essential for Anwar's unity government to maintain stability and lasting power in 2025.
