초록
This study reinterprets Tongdosa Crane Dance not merely as a traditional dance, but as a performative bodily practice and a form of practice-oriented cultural content. Previous studies have mainly focused on formal analysis, while paying limited attention to its transmission structure, performativity, and symbolic system. Accordingly, this study examines Tongdosa Crane Dance through literature and historical records, previous studies, and performance and transmission materials. The findings show that Tongdosa Crane Dance has a transmission structure marked by discontinuity and reconstruction, including transmission within the temple, disruption during the Japanese colonial period, transmission through folk tradition, and its later return to the temple. The study also analyzes the symbolism of the crane as a process of symbolic embodiment realized through bodily movement. In this respect, Tongdosa Crane Dance is not a simple imitation of the crane, but a bodily enactment of Buddhist symbolism, ritual meaning, and inner discipline. In addition, the dance contains a dual performative structure that combines ritual practice for the repose of the deceased with the performer’s own spiritual practice. These findings suggest that Tongdosa Crane Dance has the potential to expand into practice-oriented cultural content linked to wellness, performance art, temple-based experience programs, and cultural tourism. The study contributes to understanding traditional temple dance as a living cultural practice in which symbolism, body, ritual, and space are integrated
