초대학적 연구중심의 전성시대와 그 유산:한국동남아연구소 20년을 회고하며

초록

This essay provides an opportunity to review the historical background and activities of the Korean Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (KISEAS) on the occasion of its 20th anniversary. Currently, KISEAS has become a part of the Korean Association of Southeast Asian Studies(KASEAS), elevating the latter to the status of a legal entity. Given this merger, it is imperative for the members of KASEAS to gain a comprehensive understanding of the history of KISEAS. The paper commences by providing a chronological account of KISEAS journey, highlighting its initial endeavor to establish an independent, nation-wide, and trans-institutional research platform. Subsequently, it delves into a detailed analysis of the institute’s activities, including monthly seminars, collaborative research projects, the Korean Coordinator’s role of the NEAT(East Asia Think-Tank Network), Korea-ASEAN academic exchange supported by AKCF(ASEAN-Korea Cooperation Fund), and postgraduate seminars. This pioneering experiment in establishing an independent institution of area studies has left behind a multitude of valuable lessons. Notably, it underscores the challenges faced in securing external research funding. It emphasizes the crucial role of voluntary dedication and contribution from the institute’s members. Additionally, the paper remind the significance of meticulous book-keeping and auditing conducted by experts. In conclusion, the 20-year history of KISEAS serves as a valuable legacies for the dynamic operation, the positive public engagement, and the enduring sustainability of a private research institute dedicated to area studies.
