Types of Subjective Perceptions of Happiness among Retired Nurses

초록

This study aimed to identify the types and characteristics of happiness perceived by retired nurses, who have stepped away from a demanding professional life of caring for others under constant tension. Type I, ‘Enjoying a relaxed daily life,’ is characterized by finding happiness in savoring small everyday moments, caring for one's health, and embracing new experiences alongside a sense of psychological liberation from clinical work and professional responsibilities. Those in Type II, ‘Seeking social bonds,’ derive happiness from emotional exchanges with family and acquaintances; they actively sought mentors, senior colleagues, and retirement education during their working years to ensure a fulfilling post-retirement life. Type III, ‘Practicing a professional calling,’ highlights individuals who continue to value their professional identity even after retirement, experiencing happiness through gratitude and pride regarding past patient care experiences. Across all three types, relational bonds and psychological liberation from occupational tension served as the common foundation of happiness; notably, retirement was not perceived as a loss of professional worth or personal accomplishment.
