This study was carried out to determine forest carbon storage by stand age classes and regions from two dominant tree species [red pine (Pinus densiflora); and cork oak (Quercus variabilis)] stands in the Western Gyeongsangnam-do in southern Korea. Eighteen 20 m × 20 m plots from nine red pine (Pinus densiflora) and nine cork oak (Quercus variabilis) natural stands were established with three stand age classes (III: about 30-year-old; Ⅴ: about 50-year-old; VII: about 70-year-old) located in seven regions (Gosung-gun, Hadong-gun, Jinju-shi, Sancheong-gun, Uiryoung-gun, Hadong-gun and Sacheon-shi). Forest floor and soil organic carbon samples were collected from three randomly selected points in each plot during October 2010. Soil carbon storage of red pine and cork oak stands was generally higher in the VII stand age class stands (red pine: 97.84 Mg C/ha; cork oak: 87.6 Mg C/ha) than other stand age classes. However, forest floor carbon storage of red pine and cork oak stands was not significantly different (P>0.05) among the stand age classes. Soil carbon storage of red pine stands by regions was significantly higher in Hadong-gun (143.72 Mg C/ha) than in Jinju-shi (18.13 Mg C/ha), while those of cork oak stand were significantly higher in Sacheon-shi (119.9 Mg C/ha) than in Uiryoung-gun (21.92 Mg C/ha). The results indicate that the belowground carbon storage in red pine and cork oak stands could be attributed to a spatial variation such as regions rather than stand age classes.
