장소성 만들기 관점에서의 제주해녀문화의 지속가능성 탐구 - 제주 ‘해녀의 부엌’을 사례로 -

초록

This study begins with the recognition of the need for academic exploration of the sustainability of places where Jeju haenyeo (Women Divers) live and work, in order to secure the overall sustainability of Jeju haenyeo culture. Based on theoretical discussions on the formation of placeness, this research examines the placeness-making process from the perspective that placeness can be strategically and artificially constructed. Accordingly, the study categorizes the placeness-making process into ‘external’ and ‘internal’ processes, and the human actors involved as ‘outsiders’ and ‘insiders’, conducting a case analysis of ‘Haenyeo's Kitchen’ in Jeju. ‘Haenyeo's Kitchen’ in Jeju minimized physical alterations to idle facilities related to Jeju haenyeo culture and incorporated haenyeo themselves as central participants in experience programs, thereby facilitating authentic and dramatic cultural experiences and the sharing of values. This process was characterized by outsiders taking the initiative in forming strategic relationships with insiders and leading the placeness-making process, which in turn encouraged cooperation and participation from the insider group. These findings suggest that the sustainability of a place does not necessarily depend solely on the autonomous efforts of insiders, but can also be strategically and effectively achieved through the attitudes and approaches of outsiders—even when insiders remain in a relatively passive role. Going forward, it is necessary to expand empirical research on placeness-making in order to secure the sustainability of Jeju haenyeo culture, and to develop effective policy alternatives based on such research.
