Objectives:Allergic disease such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis have been considered a big public health concern due to impaired social, psychological, and behavioral adjustment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between suicide ideation, depressive symptom and allergic diseases in Korean adolescents. Methods:The data was obtained from the 2010 Korean Youth’s Risk Behavior Web-based Study by Korea Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. All students conducted web-based questionnaire survey. Simple t-tests and multiple logistic regression analysis with complex samples were performed to determine the association between suicide ideation, depressive symptoms and allergic diseases, adjusting for differences in sex, grade, school performance and socioeconomic status(SES). Results:A total 74,980 participants were enrolled and response rate of the survey was 97.7%. Suicide ideation and depressive symptom were significantly more frequent in the group with these allergic disease than in control group(p<0.01). Depressive symptoms were significantly associated with asthma(O.R=1.37, 95% CI=1.29-1.44), allergic rhinitis(O.R=1.27, 95% CI=1.23-1.31) and atopic dermatitis(O.R=1.15, 95% CI=1.11-1.20). Also, asthma(O.R=1.38, 95% CI=1.30-1.47), allergic rhinitis(O.R=1.26, 95% CI=1.21-1.31) and atopic dermatitis(O.R=1.14, 95% CI=1.09-1.19) were significantly associated with suicide ideation. Conclusion:Korean adolescents who have had allergic disease have significantly more depressive symptom and suicide ideation. It might be essential to evaluate psychological problems when treating the allergic disease in Korean adolescent.
