『삼국사기』의 삼국 인식과 역사적 정체의 재정립

Perception of the Ancient Three Kingdoms displayed in Samguk Sagi, and a re-envisioned historical presence of them

초록

Examined in this article is how Samguk Sagi (or its author, or the Goryeo people at the time for that matter) perceived the three Kingdoms that existed in the Korean peninsula’s past and portrayed them accordingly, while re-envisioning the historical reality that surrounded them. Samguk Sagi employed a first-person perspective for all three sections respectively dedicated to the history of all three kingdoms: Goguryeo, Baekje and Shilla. The fact that such viewpoint was employed not only for the other two but the Baekje section as well shows us the intention of incorporating Baekje and its history into the historical narrative regarding Goryeo’s roots, recognizing it as an entity that was part of Goryeo’s past. Meanwhile, a reinterpretation of the Dongshin Seongmo(“東神聖母, Holy mother of the Eastern deity”) tale in the Comment segment(‘Nonchan, 論贊’) seems to rather be an effort to prevent the appearance of Goryeo directly (and exclusively) related to the late Goguryeo alone. And another remark in Samguk Sagi that said the ‘maternal descendants of the late Shilla royal family became the main bloodline of Goryeo’ was merely an acknowledgement of the late Shilla king Gyeongsun’s contribution to Goryeo dynasty’s founder king Wang Geon’s efforts that resulted in the reunification of the peninsula. Also, multiple types of foundation myths were only elaborated in the Baekje section, apparently in order to separate Baekje’s history from the legacy of Goguryeo, and also to present the three ancient kingdoms on equal footing, in terms of their relationship with Goryeo. ‘Later Baekje(後百濟)’ especially, which had been considered to have been a traitor to Unified Shilla, was also newly accepted as the successor to late Baekje, so that the notion of “Three Han entities finally became one(‘Iltong Samhan, 一統三韓’)” shared by the Goryeo public would become whole. All this leads to the conclusion that unlike previous notion, the overall perspective displayed by Samguk Sagi should not be understood as a mere Shilla-centric one.
