The Tradition of Goddess Worship and the Concept of the Holy Mother in the Goryeo Dynasty

초록

This paper examines how the tradition of goddess worship, which has continued since prehistoric times, was inherited and reconfigured during the Goryeo dynasty. It focuses on the religious and sociopolitical functions of goddess ideology and its transformation in relation to state rituals and royal legitimacy. Goryeo-period texts portray goddesses as divine beings associated with creation, protection, and fertility. These figures were commonly referred to with honorifics such as Seongmo (Holy Mother) or Shinmo (Divine Mother), reflecting their elevated status. Notably, the title Seongmo was also applied to certain royal women, revealing how traditional goddess imagery was incorporated into the political discourse to sanctify the authority of the king. By analyzing deities such as Dongshin Seongmo, Jirisan Seongmo, and Seondo Seongmo, the study explores the symbolic and functional roles of these goddesses in both popular belief and royal ideology. The paper argues that goddess worship was not merely a residual folk tradition but an active element of the religious and political culture of the Goryeo period.
