This study investigates hybrid stator core structures incorporating soft magnetic composite (SMC) material to reduce core losses in axial flux permanent magnet synchronous machines (AFPMSMs). Four models-Full Lamination Steel, Full SMC, Hybrid Tooth SMC, and Hybrid CAP SMC-were analyzed using three-dimensional finite element analysis (3D-FEA). The Full SMC model effectively reduced eddy current losses but suffered from high hysteresis losses and low torque due to its low permeability, while the Full Lamination Steel model exhibited localized eddy current losses at high speeds. The Hybrid Tooth SMC model achieved limited improvement, whereas the Hybrid CAP SMC model provided significant core loss reduction, up to 19% under rated conditions and more than 30% in high-torque operation. These results indicate that the Hybrid CAP SMC design is a promising alternative for enhancing AFPMSM performance, particularly under high-speed and high-torque conditions.
