초록

This article explores the perspectives and narratives of BAME people with a view to enhance the understanding of their experience, thus offering contrast with the systemic negligence that manifested in the fire of Grenfell Tower in June 2007. It examines the substandard fire safety preparations and practices that persisted in the face of the concerns brought forward by various groups. This insistent disregard of the residents of Grenfell Tower, the majority of whom were BAME, is presented as part of the prevailing discourse of power that is an inevitable fixture of the experience of BAME people. Their position and interaction with the culture of the land they find themselves in is elucidated via the analysis of the literary works of BAME poets, precipitating the themes of disharmony with this discourse, straddling the border between two worlds and the struggle to reconcile their dual identities.
