Daicing Gurun and the Chahar: Hong Taiji’s State Formation of the Great Qing and the Role of the Chahar

초록

This article examines the modalities of existence of the surrendered Chahar Mongols and elucidates their roles and historical significance in the evolutionary process of the Manchu polity. To induce the surrender of Chahar forces, Hong Taiji recognized the offices and vested interests of Chahar officials; consequently, these groups came to constitute what may be termed “banners outside the Eight Banners.” By granting hereditary offices, the Manchu regime established direct networks between the surrendered Chahar personnel and the Later Jin Han, thereby encouraging them to render service to the imperial court. Edicts conferring hereditary offices on Chahar officials, issued from the first year of Chongde through the Shunzhi reign, encapsulate the crucial roles performed by Chahar personnel in the course of the Later Jin’s transformation into the Qing and its conquest of Ming territory. Whether voluntarily or under compulsion, these surrendered Chahar individuals participated in the establishment and expansion of the Daicing Gurun in various capacities-serving as officials, commanders, soldiers, and herdsmen on behalf of the dynasty.
