A study on the semantics and pragmatics of the conditional connective ending - daganeun

초록

This study investigates the semantic essence and pragmatic functions of the Korean conditional connective ending -daganeun. While previous research focuses primarily on negative outcomes, an empirical analysis of 784 instances of corpus data reveals a different outcome. Non-negative outcomes account for 28.4%, rising to 40.9% in the perfective variant -eotdaganeun. Based on these findings, this paper models the core mechanism as a cognitive process where a situation reaches a critical turning point that triggers a specific outcome. Depending on whether the speaker perceives this turning point as a line to be avoided or a peak to be scaled, its usage bifurcates into a directive speech act of ‘warning’ in negative contexts or an expressive speech act of ‘praise’ in non-negative ones. Morphologically, the imperfective focuses on gradual continuation, whereas the perfective treats action realization itself as the critical threshold. Furthermore, co-occurrence relations with sentence-final endings maximize these pragmatic effects. This study offers an integrated semantic model valuable for both Korean linguistics and education.
