한국 씨름의 제도화와 문화적 기억: 김학웅의 생애사적 탐구

초록

Purpose: This study aims to examine the life of Kim Hak-woong, a senior figure in Korean ssireum (traditional wrestling), and to identify the legacy he left as a coach, administrator, and scholar in the institutionalization and development of Korean ssireum. Methods: To this end, the study reviewed prior research on modern and contemporary ssireum, and analyzed various primary sources related to Kim Hak-woong, including newspapers, magazines, and monographs. In addition, in-depth interviews with Kim Hak-woong were conducted to obtain concrete testimonies regarding his activities in ssireum. Results: The findings of this study are as follows. First, Kim Hak-woong made a decisive contribution to the systematic development of high school and professional ssireum, discovering talented disciples and establishing structured technical training and an apprenticeship-based educational system. Second, he played a central role in ssireum administration and institutional development, including the improvement of competition management, institutional enhancement, and the promotion of public engagement. Third, he systematically documented the development of Korean ssireum, focusing on regional histories and biographies, thereby providing subsequent scholars with both research materials and cultural heritage. Conclusion: Kim Hak-woong was a pivotal figure in the development of Korean ssireum as a coach, administrator, and scholar. His life and achievements warrant recognition and evaluation for their significance in ssireum studies and the preservation of traditional Korean sports.
