Historical Social Science and Critical Realism

초록

This study aims to develop a perspective on historical social science that is both interdisciplinary and critical realist by examining the historical social science advocated by Immanuel Wallerstein and the critical realism of Bhaskar from an interdisciplinary perspective. This paper undertakes the following specific tasks: First, it explores how Wallerstein's knowledge paradigm, as a critic of the “two cultures,” can intersect with the philosophy of critical realism. Second, it derives methodological implications for the project of historical social science centered on TimeSpace by emphasizing the concrete turn of critical realism, which highlights the geo-historical nature of social life and the exploration of events, phases, and processes, as well as rhythmics. Third, through an interpretation that intersects the interdisciplinary projects of Wallerstein and Bhaskar, it seeks feasible pathways for a critical realist historical social science that transcends the dichotomy between disciplinarity and interdisciplinarity, as well as the opposition between history and social science.
