This study aimed to develop a preliminary scale of perceived environmental satisfaction and, using this scale, to examine local residents' rankings of satisfaction with various environmental areas and the impact of perceived environmental satisfaction on mental health. To this end, a preliminary scale was developed using a sample of adults in their 20s to 60s residing in Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do, to assess subjective satisfaction with the region’s physical environment. Mental health was evaluated through measures of subjective well-being, perceived health, and a range of emotional states. Analysis of data from 129 participants indicated that the rankings of perceived environmental satisfaction were, in order: green space satisfaction, water quality and aquatic environment, bicycle-use environment, transportation environment, air environment, and living environment. Regarding the influence of environmental satisfaction on mental health, satisfaction with water quality and the aquatic environment showed the broadest associations—covering subjective well-being, perceived health, state depression, and state anxiety. Satisfaction with the air environment was significantly related to positive affect and state depression. These findings suggest that satisfaction with specific environmental domains may differentially influence mental health. Based on these results, implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed.
