Latent Profile Analysis of Individual, Organizational, and Workplace Factors: A Boundary Theory Approach

초록

This study is an empirical investigation that explored profiles of individual and organizational factors, as well as types of overtime work, based on boundary theory. Using data from Korean employees, the study derived profiles by examining psychological detachment, perfectionism, supervisor’s workaholism, Technology-Assisted Supplemental Work (TASW, i.e., supplemental work using smart devices), and overtime work at the office. It further identified the characteristics of each profile and analyzed differences in job-related outcomes, including work engagement, burnout, availability expectations, and work-family conflict. Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) was conducted using Mplus 8.1 with data from 500 employees, resulting in four distinct profiles: “Remote Work,” “Low-Involvement,” “Psychological Detachment,” and “Workaholic.” The BCH method was then applied to examine differences in outcome variables across profiles, revealing significant differences in burnout, availability expectations, and work-family conflict. This study highlights the importance of comprehensively considering not only organizational and family-related individual factors but also boundary-related factors such as work location and working hours associated with overtime work. Finally, the implications and limitations of the study are discussed.
