지리산 기록으로 보는 근대 전환기 江右文人의 시대 인식
초록
This text examines the social activities of intellectuals during the transitional period to modernity in the Jirisan region, focusing on their perception of the era. In response to the chaotic domestic and international situation at the time, these intellectuals engaged in various activities, summarized here with respect to four key locations: Jirisan(智異山) is considered a sacred mountain for our people and a prominent local landmark. Cheonwangbong(天王峯) Peak is the highest point of Jirisan and was the pinnacle of journeys to the mountain during the Joseon Dynasty. The intellectuals of the modern transitional period regarded the "King(王)" in "Cheonwang(天王)" as the king of Joseon, and just as Cheonwangbong has endured countless adversities over thousands of years, they hoped for the rejuvenation of the weakened king through the symbolism of Cheonwangbong. Agyangjeong(岳陽亭) Pavilion in Hadong(河東) is a space associated with Jeong Yeo-chang(鄭汝昌), blending the scenery of Jirisan and the Seomjin River(蟾津江). Although it was ruined during the Muo Sahwa(戊午史禍) incident in 1498, it was rebuilt in 1901 under the leadership of the intellectuals. During the modern transitional period, when the nation's prestige and societal morals were rapidly declining, the intellectuals aimed to revive the spirit of Jeong Yeo-chang, a pioneer of Joseon Confucianism, through the reconstruction of Agyangjeong and hoped for the long-lasting transmission of its spirit. Baekundong(白雲洞) in Deoksan(德山), associated with Nammyung(南冥) Jo-sik(曺植), did not receive much attention from later scholars of the Nammyung School after his death. However, during the modern transition, significant activities were carried out by the intellectuals, including inscribing the phrase "Nammyungseonsaengjanggujisuo(南冥先生杖屨之所)" to highlight its significance as 'the space of Nammyung' and holding regular lectures. The intellectuals sought to find the roots of the declining Dao at Baekundong and aimed to create a justification and opportunity for unifying the Gangwoo area. Daewonsa Temple(大源寺) is a representative temple in the eastern region of Jirisan, which received little attention throughout the Joseon Dynasty until the modern transition when intellectuals visited it in large numbers. They focused on the name "Daewon" and perceived the journey to find the source of water in Daewondong as a process of seeking the true origin of Dao. The Confucian scholars of Joseon believed that the origin of Dao comes from heaven and pursued studies aimed at this origin. The intellectuals projected their aspiration to approach the source of heavenly principles onto Daewondong, and Daewonsa was recognized as a major site for lectures and the search for true origins. The activities conducted in the Gangwoo(江右) region during this transitional period can be seen as passive responses to the precarious political situation. However, through these efforts, the intellectuals sought unity and reflected on their social responsibilities as scholars.
