초록

This article explores the activities of the EMILYs List PAC, a prominent women’s political organization in the United States. It analyzes the factors contributing to its success and persistence while discussing the implications for the women’s political empowerment in Korea. Founded in 1984, Emily’s List has played a significant role in increasing the political representation and empowerment of women by supporting Democratic pro-choice candidates. The organization’s success can be attributed to several key factors: the leadership of its long-time head, who has been at the helm for 25 years; its clear partisan alignment with the Democratic Party; a strong focus on pro-choice women candidates; the careful selection of candidates with a high likelihood of electoral success; and the effective use of a bundling fundraising method, which allows for small donations and establishes networks among contributors. However, applying the same strategies in Korea poses challenges due to the differences in political systems and culture between the two countries. Nonetheless, we can explore various approaches to strengthen women’s political empowerment that ensure not only women’s descriptive representation but also substantive presentation in Korea. This includes establishing professional education and training organizations aimed at nurturing women and feminists with a gender equality focus to become politicians.
