진주(晉州) 월아산(月牙山)의 역사적 유래와 지역적 위상
초록
During the Joseon Dynasty, Mt. Wolasan (月牙山) in Jinju was a scenic site that held a significant position in the cultural history of the region. Since the founding of the Joseon Dynasty, numerous prominent figures have emerged from this area, and the mountain has been evaluated as a space of remarkable historical importance and meaning. Although several preceding studies have been conducted for this reason, research providing an in-depth illumination of its history remains virtually non-existent. Therefore, this study aims to understand the historical background and landscape characteristics of Mt. Wolasan based on literary documents. Through this approach, the purpose of this paper is to establish foundational data that verifies the regional status and significance of Mt. Wolasan. Mt. Wolasan was highly acclaimed during the early Joseon Dynasty as a celebrated mountain that produced great ministers and generals (將相). It housed famous Buddhist temples such as Cheonggoksa (靑谷寺), and the wooden stockade constructed by Kim Deok-ryeong (金德齡) was widely discussed as a historic relic. Meanwhile, although Mt. Wolasan was called by the alternative name “Bandongsan” within the region, this study determines that calling it “Dareomsan” or “Dareumsan” today stems from an etymological error. Scholars and literati of the Joseon Dynasty climbed Mt. Wolasan to recite their respective sentiments, and the mountain was recognized as an essential scenic attraction of the region due to its significance. The various remaining poems and writings vividly manifest diverse images associated with Mt. Wolasan, which clearly testifies to its history of functioning as a crucial landscape asset of Jinju.
