Salvage Performance Estimation of Modular Buildings Using an IFC-Based BWPE Process

초록

The circular economy aims to maximize resource efficiency by keeping materials in continuous use rather than following a linear take-use-dispose model. Achieving this transition in construction requires design-stage prediction of reuse and recycling potential, yet the heterogeneous nature of construction and demolition waste hinders component-level quantification. This study proposes an 'IFC-Based BWPE' process that implements the BIM-based Whole-Life Performance Estimator through IFC-based open BIM data exchange, improving interoperability and attribute transparency across the workflow. BWPE input variables were standardized as shared parameters in Autodesk Revit 2026 and mapped to a custom IFC property set, enabling vendor-neutral parsing. For multi-layered elements, material-volume-based calculations were performed using Dynamo. The process was demonstrated on two modular buildings—a container house and a portable toilet—yielding initial reuse rates above 0.93. Over a 50-year service life, performance remained stable initially but declined sharply after 30 years, with the reuse–disposal crossover near year 49, highlighting the criticality of deconstruction timing. The proposed framework provides a reproducible, standards-based foundation for design-stage circular performance assessment and may support future green certification discussions and policy-oriented circularity assessment frameworks.
