A Study on the geographic distribution of Geoje Salamander Hynobius geojeensis - Based on Identification of Species by DNA Analysis Technology -

초록

Geographic distribution of Geoje Salamander, Hynobius geojeensis, was studied with 192 salamander samples collected in 2022 and 2023 from 98 survey points in Geoje Island and its surrounding areas. Among them, 81 samples were confirmed to be Geoje Salamander, the other 97 samples Southern Korean Salamander, Hynobius notialis, and the rest 14 the Korean Salamander, Hynobius leechii, by the DNA sequencing analysis. The Geoje Salamander was found only from the middle and southern part of Geoje Island and a subordinate island. The Geoje Salamander was not found in the other areas surveyed in this study: subordinate islands of Geoje, Tong-yeong city, and Gadeokdo island of Pusan city. As the habitat range of Geoje Salamander is confined to very small areas in Geoje city, governmental protection measures need to be sought out such as designating this species as a legally protected species and designating its core habitat as a legally protected area.
