Corrosion in steel structures reduces the cross-sectional resistance performance of members, thereby affecting steel structural safety and tensile resistance performance. In this study, the effect of corroded surface characteristics on the tensile resistance performance of steel tubular members is analyzed. The corrosion damage levels of corroded steel tubular specimens were evaluated, and tensile tests were conducted to examine variations in tensile resistance performance and fracture behavior. Finite element analysis was performed on corroded steel tubular members with varying corrosion thicknesses and surface characteristics using a semi-variogram approach to investigate the effect of surface uncertainty on changes in tensile strength. The tensile tests and finite element analyses showed that as the mean corrosion depth increased, the tensile resistance performance of the steel tubular members decreased linearly, and fracture occurred at the location of the maximum corrosion depth. In addition, at the same mean corrosion depth, the yield and tensile loads of the steel tubular members decreased as surface variability increased. The average reduction in the yield load and tensile load of the steel tubular members were 3.51% and 5.10%, respectively, while the maximum reductions were 6.64% and 10.10%, respectively. Therefore, it is necessary to consider fabrication specifications of structural members, mean corrosion depth, and corroded surface characteristics to evaluate the residual tensile strength and structural safety of corroded steel tubular members.
