Propose of Seismic Accelerometer Installation Locations for Saemangeum Seawall Drainage Sluice Garyeok Bridge based on Time History Analysis

초록

The Saemangeum seawall, the longest in the world, serves as key infrastructure in South Korea for seawater circulation, flood control, and water supply. Bridges within the seawall connect the sea to the inner lake, and piers are integrated with large drainage gates, generating a complex structural behavior distinct from that of ordinary bridges. However, under the Disaster Countermeasures for Earthquakes and Volcanic Eruptions Act (2016) and the revised Standards for the Installation and Operation of Seismic Accelerometers (2023), seawalls are excluded from mandatory seismic monitoring requirements. Hence, despite the national significance of the structure, continuous seismic observation systems have not been established. Amidst growing concerns regarding large earthquakes, seawall bridges with massive auxiliary components, such as drainage gates and hoisting systems, are particularly vulnerable to concentrated seismic damage due to large inertial forces. This study conducted a detailed nonlinear time history analysis on a drainage sluice bridge in the Saemangeum seawall. The analysis identified potential damage zones and proposed optimal locations for installing seismic accelerometers to support the future development of a structural health monitoring system for enhanced seismic resilience.
