This paper aims to uncover the political and ideological characteristics embedded in Liu Cixin’s original novel The Three-Body Problem and the Netflix adaptation by comparing and analyzing several major characters. Chapter 2, the first section of the main discussion, focuses on Ye Wenjie —a female character who can be considered the most problematic figure in both the original novel and the series. Chapter 3 analyzes characters corresponding to the so-called “Oxford Five” in the drama, as well as the “Wallfacers”, who are presented as products of a global project, comparing them to their counterparts in the novel. Ye Wenjie is the first character to invite the Trisolarans to Earth. In the Netflix adaptation, several aspects of her character are altered in ways that suggest political and ideological implications. This paper argues that these changes reflect a critique or rejection of “radicalism.” The drama simplifies Ye Wenjie’s more complex and multi-layered character as portrayed in the original work. For example, in the novel, Ye experiences ambivalent feelings toward humanity— continuing her involvement in the Trisolaran movement while retaining a certain emotional attachment to humankind. However, this dimension is absent in the series. Instead, Ye is depicted as a colder and more uncompromising practitioner, which can be interpreted as a stronger denunciation of radicalism through her character. The Netflix adaptation of The Three-Body Problem does not stop at this critique; it also attempts to explore alternative meanings. This paper examines those alternatives through the lens of “political correctness.” Political correctness—referring to linguistic and practical sensitivity toward racial, gender, ethnic, and sexual minorities—holds considerable ideological influence in Western socio-cultural contexts, particularly in the postmodern era centered around the United States. The Netflix series reflects this concern through various alterations in character design that diverge from the original novel. Notably, the character of Auggie (based on Wang Miao from the original) presents an alternative model of humanity that is entirely absent from the novel. This, too, appears closely tied to the series’ strategic deployment of political correctness.
