초록

This paper aims to briefly present Seok-Heon Ham’s ssial thought, focusing on the theory of oneness, and then intensively examine the social theoretical significance of this theory. Although he was neither a social scientist nor a social theorist, social thought occupies a very significant portion of his ssial thought as a whole. Therefore, it is not difficult to find new social theoretical insights and perspectives within his original social thought. Of course, his ssial thought is broadly connected not only to social scientific issues but also to the theories of civilization, religion, science, life, history, and even cosmology; thus, there are clear limitations to narrowing it down and systematizing it solely as a social theory. In particular, there are significant difficulties in approaching the concept of oneness, which forms the core axis of his ssial thought, from the perspective of social theory. Nevertheless, in this paper, I will first briefly introduce his theory of oneness from the perspective of a sociologist, and then, based on this content, examine the social theoretical significance of his theory of oneness in relation to the theories of social solidarity, the self, civil society, globalization and global citizenship, and eco-social theoretical perspectives. Furthermore, after discussing the unique potential of his theory of oneness as a social thought or social theory, I will conclude this paper by briefly explaining the characteristics and significance of his theory of oneness, in comparison to Professor Seung-Kuk Kim’s project on the logic of oneness, which served as the impetus for writing this paper.
