The Effect of Discrimination Experiences on Depression in the Elderly: Verification of the Mediating Effect of Human Rights Sensitivity

초록

Purpose This study aims to identify the impact of discrimination experiences on depression among the elderly and to verify the mediating role of human rights sensitivity in this relationship. Methods A survey was conducted with 502 elderly individuals aged 65 and over nationwide. For analysis, descriptive statistics, mean comparison analysis, cross-analysis, and mediation effect analysis were performed using the statistical package SPSS 27.0. The analysis results are as follows. Results The study found that discrimination experiences are a major factor that increases depression among the elderly, which is explained by the mediating role of human rights sensitivity. Discrimination experiences weaken human rights sensitivity, which in turn increases the level of depression. This implies that the more discrimination experiences are encountered, the more human rights sensitivity decreases, resulting in intensified depression. Conclusion These results suggest the need for policy interventions to enhance human rights sensitivity and reduce discrimination to improve the mental health of the elderly. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the relationship between discrimination experiences and depression among the elderly and provides practical alternatives for improving the quality of life for the elderly.
