Searching for an Alternative to Value-Free Science: Focusing on the Debates over Evolutionary Psychology

초록

Value-inclusive science and value-oriented science are two alternative ideals that emerged in response to the value-free ideal of science. While value-inclusive science emphasizes objectivity through diversity, value-oriented science emphasizes justice through responsibility. In this paper, I have shown that these two ideals stand in a relation of tension, and that the ideal of value-oriented science cannot be justified solely by the argument from inductive risk. By focusing on the social role of science, I defended the ideal of value-inclusive science. Although value-inclusive science has the limitation of making consensus difficult among competing theories, I demonstrated—using the historical debate over evolutionary psychology as a case study—that value-inclusive science can enhance objectivity even in the long-term disagreement.
