Ethylene (C2H4) is a key petrochemical feedstock, and its separation from ethane (C2H6) remains an energy-intensive process typically performed by cryogenic distillation. Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based membranes have emerged as promising alternatives due to their well-defined pore architectures and tunable chemical functionalities. This mini-review summarizes recent progress in MOF-based membranes for C2H4/C2H6 separation, focusing on continuous polycrystalline membranes, mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs), and emerging ethane-selective concepts. Advances in crystallographic orientation control, framework design, and interfacial engineering are discussed in relation to separation performance. Particular attention is given to structure-transport relationships governing selective permeation. Key challenges, including defect formation, stability under realistic conditions, and scalability, are also addressed, along with perspectives on future material and process development toward industrial implementation.
