키릴 세레브렌니코프의 영화 《리모노프: 에디의 발라드》 연구 - 부조화의 미학과 파편화된 주체를 중심으로 -

This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the hybrid aesthetics and the figuration of a fragmented subject in Kirill Serebrennikov‘s 2024 film, Limonov: The Ballad of Eddie. Deliberately subverting the conventions of the traditional biopic, the film eschews a chronological representation of the controversial figure Eduard Limonov’s life. Instead, it embodies his fractured self and existential struggles through its very formal experimentation. Through textual analysis, this study examines the film's narrative structure, audio-visual style, and its crucial sonic dimension—the soundtrack—to elucidate the organic relationship between these aesthetic choices and the representation of its protagonist. The analysis reveals that Serebrennikov constructs Limonov’s multi-layered identity by employing key strategies: the collision of theatricality and realism, meta-narrative devices, and existential performance through the body. Notably, the soundtrack, featuring Massimo Pupillo’s industrial score and Shortparis’s post-punk music, functions as a third narrative layer. Pupillo’s score aurally embodies the character’s internal chaos, while Shortparis’s music captures the collective madness of the era, providing both critical distance and a visceral experience for the audience. The film traces Limonov's life trajectory—from his artistic birth in New York to his ideological battles in Paris and Russia, and his final transaction with power—exploring how an individual's existence collides with history and how one invents oneself as a myth. In conclusion, Limonov is a problematic text with both significant aesthetic achievements and clear limitations. It faces criticism for aestheticizing political radicalism and superficially treating certain aspects of Limonov’s life. However, it is precisely through this incompleteness and formal provocation that the film transcends the biopic genre. It becomes one of the most significant contemporary 'ballads' that poses fundamental questions about the boundaries between art and politics, fact and fiction.
