The Relationship Between Rejection Sensitivity and Social Anxiety Among University Students: The Mediating Effects of Self-Compassion and Experiential Avoidance

초록

This study examined the mediating effects of self-compassion and experiential avoidance in the relationship between rejection sensitivity and social anxiety among university students. A total of 266 university students completed an online survey using the Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire (RSQ), the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS), the Social Phobia Scale (SPS), the Korean Self-Compassion Scale (K-SCS), and the Korean Multidimensional Experiential Avoidance Questionnaire (K-MEAQ-24). The results showed that all major variables were significantly correlated. In addition, self-compassion and experiential avoidance each significantly mediated the relationship between rejection sensitivity and social anxiety, and their sequential mediating effect was also significant. These findings suggest that self-compassion and experiential avoidance may sequentially contribute to the process through which rejection sensitivity leads to social anxiety, and provide implications for interventions targeting social anxiety among university students.
