The embroidery pillow is the representative bottom drawer of women during Joseon Dynasty. Large quantity and various kinds of the embroidery pillow ends are found because both common and royal families prepared for the embroidery pillow as their bottom drawer. Therefore the embroidery pillow is very important reference for the research of Joseon Dynasty's embroidery culture and formativeness. The embroidery pillow has representative formativeness because it contains various patterns and techniques including lucky omen. However, little facts are known about royal family’s embroidery pillow, since most remains were made and used by commons. If royal families' embroidery pillow, which had certain forms and formalities in pattern, colors, materials and decoration, is compared with commons' embroidery pillow, similar and different points can be found. Ten traditional symbols of longevity and nine-phoenix pattern wishing for fecundity and happy family is marriage pillow pattern which is preferred by both royal family’s and commons. The patterns such as twin dragons, Qilins and five mountain peaks which symbolize special class cannot be found in common people’s embroidery pillow ends. Even though general wishes for fecundity and happy marriage life are equal both in royal and common families. Patterns from difficult Chinese characters are traditionally preferred in royal family, which are rarely found in common people’s embroidery pillow ends. Through these different preferences of lucky patterns between royal and common families, we can identify their different beauty and emotion.
