Effects of Braking Strategies and Gear Downshift on Fuel Consumption of Heavy-Duty Trucks

초록

This study experimentally investigates fuel-consumption characteristics during the deceleration and stopping of a heavy-duty cargo truck under different braking strategies. The results indicate that fuel consumption during deceleration is governed primarily by downshift events rather than by deceleration intensity. Distinct fuel-consumption peaks are consistently observed during the 4→3→2 →1 gear downshift sequence across all braking modes. By contrast, fuel consumption in the low-speed region below 10 km/h is attributable primarily to engine idling. Comparative analysis indicates that coasting yields the lowest total fuel consumption by minimizing downshift and idling. Blended braking increases fuel consumption due to a combined increase in gear-shift frequency and idle duration. The results suggest minimizing low-speed idle time and downshift counts in deceleration zones to improve fuel efficiency in heavy-duty vehicles.
