Sociality and Building Social Capability: An Agent-based Model with a System Dynamics Interpretation

초록

This study analyzes sociality formed by individuals with different abilities and cultural traits using an artificial society model. The paper defines social capability as an aggregate social outcome that emerges from the combination of interaction quality, cultural diversity, and capability complementarity. These elements are formed through random encounters and learning processes among agents. The model explicitly includes population dynamics such as birth, death, and migration. It traces the formation and evolution of social capability through dynamic feedback between micro- level interactions and macro- level social capability. Large-scale repeated computer simulations are used to identify conditions under which social capability grows in a stable way. The study also conducts sensitivity analysis on policy related parameters that represent social capability spillovers and support for lower capability groups. In addition, the study shows that when assortative preference among high capability groups becomes stronger, social capability rises rapidly at first and then collapses. This overshooting and collapse pattern reveals a structural link between rising inequality and the weakening of social capability. Overall, the study explains how sociality formed through micro-level interactions can be transformed into macro-level social capability. It provides theoretical insights into the relationship among diversity, learning, and social policy
