『파묻힌 거인』에 나타난 적의 얼굴을 향한 타자의 윤리

Ethics of Otherness toward the Faces of the Enemy in The Buried Giant

초록

This paper examines what causes biased views about people or groups of people to develop and how Ishiguro combines prejudice and discrimination in The Buried Giant. Ishiguro presents three factors that can create prejudice and bias. One is ignorance and fear of the unknown. Another is the inability to accept differences or deal with those who are different. The final one is simply being biased against someone just because he or she is a member of a disfavored group. First, this paper provides a short sketch of what causes the prejudice and discrimination presented in The Buried Giant. Then the paper explores what ethics of otherness toward the faces of the enemy are, with reference to Emmanuel Levinas’ Totality and Infinity.
