지수 승산마을 효주 허만정 선생의 일생과 GS 가문의 기업가정신에 관한 연구

초록

This study aims to trace the root of entrepreneurship for the GS Group by examining the life and legacy of Heo Man-jeong, a key figure from the Heo family in Seungsan Village, Jisu-myeon, Jinju. It explores how the father-son values of Heo Man-jeong and his father, Heo Jun (also known as Jisinjeong), evolved into the entrepreneurship embodied by today’s GS Group. The Heo family of Seungsan Village laid the foundation for the formation of the present-day LG and GS Groups through business partnerships with Koo In-hwoi, founder of LG, and played a major role in the early development of the Samsung Group through cooperation with its founder, Lee Byung-chul. During the Japanese colonial period, Heo Man-jeong actively participated in Korea’s independence movement. He co-founded the Baeksan Trading Company with An Hee-je(known as Baeksan) to support the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in Shanghai. He also founded the Jungoe Ilbo newspaper to promote press activities and established Ilshin School (now Jinju Girls’ High School), emphasizing the importance of education for national salvation during those dark times. After Korea’s liberation from Japan, Heo Man-jeong co-founded Lucky Chemical Industrial Corporation (LG Chem) with Koo In-hwoi and facilitated the involvement of his sons and sons-in-law in business, contributing to the growth of Goldstar (now LG Electronics). Furthermore, he invested in the founding of Samsung Corporation and sent his eldest son, Heo Jeong-gu, to assist Lee Byung-chul in laying the foundation of Samsung. Heo Man-jeong not only devoted the wealth inherited from his father to the nation and people but also significantly contributed to the formation of today’s LG/GS and Samsung Groups through his collaborative business spirit with figures such as Koo In-hwoi and Lee Byung-chul. His spirit of partnership stands as a rare and exemplary model of entrepreneurship in the world.
