회산(晦山) 이택환(李宅煥)의 지리산 유람과 시대 인식

초록

This study examines the journey of a prominent figure from the Gangwoo region to Mt. Jiri during Korea’s transitional period to modernity. It focuses on Yuduryurok(流頭流錄) by Hoe-san Lee Taek-hwan(晦山 李宅煥) and draws on related contemporary records. The Yuduryurok contains a day-by-day account of a 15-day journey beginning on May 14, 1902. However, its opening section declares the meaning and legitimacy of the tradition of touring Nammak(南嶽), followed by an expression of deep respect for Myeon-am Choi Ik-hyeon (勉菴 崔益鉉) as a moral exemplar of the time. This indicates that the work was not created merely to record a trip, nor was the journey itself simply a matter of travel. In fact, the Yuduryurok was not a record of a private excursion planned solely by Lee or with a few acquaintances. An examination of the background and creative process of the Yuduryurok reveals that its most distinctive feature lies in the aspect of Dong-yu(同遊, traveling together). Although Lee documented the large- scale tour, in which at least 35 people participated, his writing also reflects his perception of the era as an intellectual of the Gangwoo region during the transitional period to modernity. After passing the civil service examination, Lee served in central government posts in the early and middle stages of his life, but chose to return to his hometown due to the corruption of contemporary politics. Throughout his life, he consistently engaged in lectures(ganghoe, 講會) and poetry gatherings(sihwoe, 詩會), maintaining his activities as a member of the Nosa School in the Gangwoo region during the modern transition, demonstrating his clear-eyed view of the times and commitment to his calling as an intellectual.
