A Study on the Sentence-Final Particle “yone”

초록

To clarify the characteristics of “yone,” this paper categorizes the expression into “semantic usages” and “co-occurrence with modality,” examining the specific features of each usage and identifying which modalities can or cannot co-occur with “yone.” The results are summarized as follows. (1) In the “confirmation” usage, the speaker employs “yone” to verify whether information they already possess aligns with that of the other party, or to confirm with the listener information obtained during the conversation. “yone” is also used when the speaker wants to confirm whether their own judgment aligns with that of the listener. (2) For “yone” to function in the context of “providing information or offering an opinion,” it must co-occur with “noda.” (3) Regarding co-occurrence with modality, “yone” can co-occur with request expressions such as “-te kudasai” and the “-te” form of verbs, but it cannot co-occur with “darou” or with sentences expressing commands, prohibitions, or invitations.
