After World War II, the Social Democratic Party and the Christian Democratic Party of Germany implemented policies to guarantee the lives of workers whose income has decreased due to diseases or injuries unrelated to work, according to the ideology of the political party. The Social Democratic Party has pursued a policy that reflects the values of freedom, social justice, and social solidarity in the continued remuneration and the sickness benefit system. Therefore, the Social Democratic Party has promoted a policy of the continued remuneration and the sickness benefit that allows all possible workers to be treated equally and to receive sufficient income guarantees. The Christian Democratic Party has made the policies of the continued remuneration and the sickness benefit, emphasizing the principle of subsidiarity and considering the financial burden of small and medium-sized enterprises. The Christian Democratic Party has never called for the abolition of the continued remuneration and the sickness benefit system, but preferred a policy in which workers also took some financial responsibility. As a result, the policy of the continued remuneration and the sickness benefit system was implemented, which differed depending on the period of power of the two parties.
