後滄 金澤述의 지리산 유람과 시대 인식

This study examines Tour Diary of Mt. Duryu (頭流山遊錄) by Hu-chang Kim Taek-sul (後滄 金澤述, 1884–1954), focusing on his journey to Mt. Jiri and the intellectual and historical consciousness embedded in the text. Unlike most contemporaneous travel accounts from the Honam region, which typically describe excursions only as far as Hadong, Kim’s record includes the ascent to Cheonwangbong Peak. For Kim, the journey was not merely a physical expedition but also a deeply personal undertaking shaped by his reverence for his teacher, Gan-jae Jeon Woo (艮齋 田愚). Through encounters with sites associated with past sages, the journey became a means of seeking responses to contemporary challenges, as well as a process of testing and reaffirming pre-existing convictions. The paper first considers Kim’s perception of travel as an intellectual under Japanese colonial rule, before addressing the background and motivations for his Mt. Jiri expedition. It further examines classical poems composed during the same period but omitted from the diary, situating them within the broader interpretive framework of the work. By analyzing the author’s reflections and drawing upon his related writings, the study elucidates Kim’s historical consciousness and his stance as an intellectual of the modern transitional era. Kim’s extended reflections at Cheonwangbong reveal his authorial consciousness most vividly. Recalling the lives of sages who endured historical upheavals, he sought to fortify strategies for confronting present realities. At the same time, by directly addressing the unsatisfactory social conditions of his day and critically exposing the structural problems underlying them, Kim articulated the sober and discerning outlook of an intellectual navigating the challenges of modernity.
