초록

This study examines the development, characteristics, and cultural-historical significance of collective Learning held by scholars of the Gang’u region during the transitional period to modernity. These gatherings took place in Nammyeong Jo Sik’s (Nammyeong) lecture spaces—Sanhaejeong, Noeryongjeong, and Sancheonjae—and served as venues for educating local Confucian students. During this period, the intellectuals of the Gang’u region revered Nammyeong Jo Sik as the moral exemplar of the Confucian community and regarded his lecture spaces as places where Confucian learning was realized in practice. They organized collective Learning in these spaces to transmit Nammyeong’s teachings and to revitalize the scholarly tradition of the region. The development of these collective Learning can be summarized in three aspects. First, by reciting “Daehakpaljoga” at Sanhaejeong and performing rites of reverence before the “Saseonghyondo” at Sancheonjae, they sought to internalize the spirit of Nammyeong and the consciousness of succession to his learning. Second, by establishing detailed regulations (jeolmok) and ensuring transparent financial management, they aimed to sustain these gatherings as institutions for cultivating moral and intellectual talent. Third, amid the national crisis of foreign invasion and the decline of Confucianism, these collective Learning became arenas for expressing loyalty to Confucian principles and nurturing future scholars grounded in moral integrity. Through such practices, the collective Learning held in Nammyeong’s lecture spaces revealed the strong will to inherit Nammyeong’s thought and laid the foundation for establishing the intellectual identity of the Gang’u region. Even amid historical upheaval, the region’s scholars continued to cultivate students and safeguard Confucian values, thereby reinforcing the legacy of Nammyeong’s spirit. This enduring tradition ultimately enabled the full flowering of “Nammyeong Studies” (Nammyeonghak) that continues to this day.
