The Ethical Implications of Fake News and Moral-Educational Responses

초록

This study examines the ethical problem of fake news and explores the role of moral education in addressing it. In today’s algorithm- driven digital environment, the rapid spread of false information accelerates the proliferation of fake news, which has emerged as a serious ethical issue threatening democratic public discourse. Through a review of prior research, this study confirms that people tend to unconsciously accept the information they are exposed to as true. As an educational response to this automatic acceptance of information, this study proposes the concept of an ‘ethical hypothesis’. This concept encourages individuals to regard their initial judgments not as fixed conclusions but as provisional explanations. Education based on ethical hypotheses aims to foster critical reflection on the formation of moral judgments and to cultivate responsible citizenship. Addressing fake news, therefore, should go beyond simple fact- checking and instead be approached as an educational task that nurtures ethical reasoning and reflective thinking. To this end, the study recommends sustained, reflection-oriented moral education practices grounded in the ethical hypothesis.
