This study investigates the utilization of domestic tree species in Korea to advance carbon reduction goals and promote sustainable construction practices. The research focuses on representative hardwood and softwood species commonly found in Korean forests, evaluating their suitability for reforestation and application as exterior materials. Main criteria include Site Index, carbon sequestration capacity, and material performance characteristics such as density, and resistance to environmental conditions. Reforestation strategies were developed for forests in Daejeon and Gyeryongsan, regions actively implementing wood-friendly city project. Through scenario-based analysis, the study explores how reforestation can enhance timber production and carbon absorption while aligning with local ecological conditions. The results indicate significant increases in timber yield and carbon storage potential, with Mongolian Oak emerging as a highly adaptable species for exterior applications due to its favorable physical properties and environmental performance. The findings emphasize the dual benefits of integrating reforestation with sustainable material production, demonstrating up to a 278.94% improvement in exterior material production and an increase in carbon absorption rates to 8.56 tCO2/ha/year in the Daejeon region. The study also underscores the economic viability of reducing reliance on imported timber by leveraging local resources. By providing a comprehensive framework for assessing and optimizing timber utilization, this research contributes to carbon neutrality initiatives, eco-friendly building material development, and sustainable forestry management practices in Korea.
