초록
In this study, we examined the mineralogical and geochemical features of obsidian artifacts from the Sinamri site at Ulju, one of the Neolithic sites in South Korea, and estimated the provenance of the artifacts. Some clinopyroxene microlites of hedenbergite to augite occur as oikocryst enclosing smaller Fe-oxides. The others, of clinoferrosilite, show intergrowth and/or overgrowth textures with Fe-oxides. Major oxides contents for the matrix of the obsidian artifacts exhibit a narrow compositional range, especially SiO2 contents being 72.3~76.0 wt.% of acidic rhyolitic composition, but represent two distinct variation trends. Also, bimodal rare earth element (REE) contents exist in the obsidian artifacts, as well as two different chondrite-normalized REE patterns with strong Eu negative anomalies. Comparing these mineralogical and geochemical features of the Sinamri obsidian artifacts with those from both the Baekdusan obsidians and Japanese Kyushu obsidians, the Neolithic Sinamri obsidian artifacts could have originated from both the Baekdusan and the Kyushu obsidians. In particular, an artifact made of sanukite could be other evidence of the Kyushu origin for some materials in the Sinamri site.
