In Russian, po- comparatives form a distinct semantic–morphological subgroup within the broader category of comparatives, exhibiting unique meanings and functions. Whereas general comparatives quantify the degree difference between two arguments along a scale, pocomparatives denote a minimal difference in degree. The prefix poencapsulates the meaning of “slightly more” within a single lexical unit, contrasting with the use of degree adverbs (e.g., ‘slightly,’ ‘a little’) in many other languages. Diachronically, po- derives from a preposition expressing spatial boundaries, which in the comparative domain evolved to mark boundaries of degree, thereby narrowing the perceived difference. Syntactically, comparatives establish morphological and semantic symmetry between the subject and the standard of comparison, expressed explicitly (via the genitive or chem) or implicitly when omitted. Although po- comparatives occur in both patterns, implicit constructions predominate and often directly modify a preceding noun. Semantically, they extend beyond minimal degree distinctions to convey subjective choice, possibility, or maximal degree, depending on speaker intention and discourse context. In colloquial registers, po- comparatives modulate illocutionary force, functioning to soften or intensify it. Mitigating uses produce a softening effect, while selective uses heighten emphasis. When combined with imperatives, they can serve as a politeness strategy by reducing the addressee’s perceived burden, making them a salient and productive phenomenon in contemporary Russian.
